I have noticed when doing readings and answering follow-up questions, certain themes emerge. I’m going to address one of those recent themes today, since I already answered the other: is it too soon to come see you for a reading again? in a previous post. The other question was, How do I cleanse myself or my home, energetically?
It’s really one of those questions that should be asked of a spiritual teacher or a religious figure, and not by your neighborhood friendly tarot reader. However, since I do happen to be both a witch AND tarot reader, I can both understand why clients would ask, and why they would ask it of me.
Things I use for negativity/clearing/cleansing:
- White sage: Yes, I do use white sage. I usually get the little bundled kind. For clearing house, I focus on smudging around doorways, windows/windowsills, mirrors, and corners…. wherever energy can enter, or accumulate. Make sure to really get in any corners, as corners tend to gather more stagnated energy than open spaces. On the body I focus on around the top of my head, circle it around my body, and down to my feet. Different people will have different areas to focus on when smudging their bodies. If there happens to be chronic ailments in a particular portion of your body, direct your smudging on those areas as well.
- Florida Water (or agua florida)…. can be found pretty readily… most of the time you can purchase it from any chain pharmacy. It’s a clear plastic bottle with a white label, made by Murray & Lanman. Use a small amount on the top of the head when feeling spacy, and a bit on the shoulders, swipe down the arms, and a small amount on the tops of your feet as well. Then shower, and imagine any negativity going down the drain as you wash. After that, imagine the water pouring on you as filled with white light… as if you are bathing in light and water. You can also use a bit of florida water and rub your hands together with it during the day to blast any negativity.
- Citrus oil or peppermint oil: for positivity and alertness… this is more aromatherapy than not, as the scent of citrus promotes positive feelings when smelling it, and peppermint oil gives you some pep when smelling it. Feeling sluggish during the day? Don’t reach for another cup of coffee… have a sniff of citrus oil or peppermint oil to boost your energy. Alternatively, you can pop a piece of peppermint gum as well.
- Epsom or sea salts: If a shower isn’t doing it for you, take a bath using Epsom or sea salt. Salt is very purifying AND a salt bath can alleviate small aches and pains as well (but makes sure not to shave in a salt bath or have any cuts or scrapes on you while indulging in a salt bath, otherwise: OUCH!). After bathing, get out of the bath and visualize the water as it drains out carrying the negative energy (like you would in the shower).
Mindfulness and cleansing with intention is incredibly important. Any small item of home or body cleansing can become an act in energy cleansing… including laundry! Feeling sluggish and ready for a serious cleanse, but you’re not quite sure why? Check your surroundings for clutter BEFORE you break out the sage and agua florida… clearing your clutter first can and will raise your vibration immensely and immediately.
Please note: Be conscious of your own allergies and sensitivities. I suggest using a small amount of the above if you are not sure how you will react, or visualize the cleansing act sans the ingredients can also be beneficial for those with sensitivities.
Blessings,

Great blog topic, Hilary – thanks for sharing your favourite ways!
I like to use frankicense or sandalwood incense for smudging. I also have a sacred space spray from Findhorn which is absolutely fab. Amethyst and citrine are wonderful cleansers and vibration raisers. I also use sound. I have a tibetan bell which totally does the job. Even just playing classical music can help. Especially Handel and Vivaldi. I use sea salt and essential oils for cleansing and healing in the bath. Pine essential oil is very cleansing and also has other benefits.
Lisa, thanks for your comment and additional ways to cleanse/smudge! I love sandalwood incense as well, amethyst and citrine are some of my favorite crystals for cleansing and energetic boosts. 🙂
I am fascinated with the use of Tibetan bells and singing bowls, but don’t currently own either. I guess I haven’t found the right one yet that will “sing” for me! Thanks for sharing!
