5 Simple Steps to Activate Your Intuition

When I first launched my website in September 2011, I offered a launch party special of 2-for-1 email readings. Needless to say, the deluge of reading requests that followed delighted me, and I rolled up my sleeves and did about twenty e-mail readings over that weekend. It was great, but I noticed an unusual side effect: I started getting messages without the cards. I was spooked, well and truly, until I asked a fellow tarot reader if she had experienced this. When she said yes, I was relieved. Yes, I’m used to being a little kooky, but it was reassuring to know I wasn’t the only one.

Since then, these messages that I’ve gotten sans tarot have led me to avoid traffic jams, keep from being blindsided by curve ball situations, and spoiled my boyfriend’s plans to propose (times 3). I have the luxury of practiced intuition, because I do it every day through my Card of the Day pulls and through giving readings (it’s my business, after all). But I’ve taken the opportunity to break it down for y’all some ways that you too can get your psychic feelers out there and practice. All of these steps I do in my daily life, while waiting for the elevator, waiting for a train, or just being out and about in the world.

Here are the 5 Simple Steps to Activate Your Intuition:

  1. The Elevator Game: When at a bank of elevators, stand quietly. Then choose which door will open first. Try not to use your other senses (like straining to hear the machinery of the elevator to give you an auditory clue). Make your decision and stand confidently in front of it. Smile slyly at the awed onlookers, until you clue them in that they’re psychic too!
  2. Train Door Roulette: When waiting for a train (subway or otherwise), stand on the platform in a place that you believe the doors will open up directly in front of you. Wait for your train, and see if you are right!
  3. Red Car, Blue Car: If you find yourself waiting outside for a cab, a friend, or for any ole reason, why not play this game for flexing your intuition muscles? Observe the flow of traffic. Then try to guess which color car will be the next car to come around the corner or pass by. (For an additional challenge, once you experience success in guessing the color, try guessing the make and model of the next car… or even the year!)
  4. Radio Station DJ: If you’ve had a song stuck in your head on a loop, it may be because you are sensitive to the radio waves in the air… why not pop on the radio and scan through the stations? You’ll be surprised to find your song playing! (Note: this could also be a way of loved ones that have passed away of communicating with you; I’m no medium, but pay special attention if the song happens to be a common one to a loved one or a favorite of theirs. They may be trying to say Hello. This also works for the living: often, a song that makes me think of someone will get stuck in my head, play on the radio, and then they will contact me within the next 24 hours; or, vice-versa, I will contact them and they’ll say, “That’s so weird, I was JUST thinking about you!”)
  5. Play Fortuneteller: Start slowly, be gentle with yourself, and find some supportive guinea pigs who are willing to be read for. This exercise may seem “slumber party”-esque, but trust me, it works if you have brave souls willing to read for each other and be open to the experience. Try different types of divinatory reading methods: psychometry (hold an item of the person’s in your hand and read from that), tarot (of course), cartomancy such as Lenormand, Angel, or Oracle decks, palmistry, or even tea leaf reading. You need not have prior knowledge; just an open mind and a willingness to play. You could even draw a picture and have the other person draw what they think you drew. For more ideas of what psychic “games” you could play, I highly recommend Cassandra’s Psychic Party Games by Cassandra Eason.

As with anything, the old adage “What does it take to get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice…” comes in. The more you do these simple and fun exercises, the more you will feel your intuition igniting. Yes, you will be wrong (at first). But with practice, you will get more accurate hits. In addition, you will also start to notice the triggers in your body that tell you “Oh hell yeah, this is correct”.

For more information about activating your intuition with the tarot specifically, check out my post Advice for New Readers for some helpful hints. Most of all, don’t be afraid to say what you see, even if you don’t understand it (and always with permission if you are reading for someone else… don’t accost strangers in the street with your info!). Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You’re going to make them; you’re human.

Wonderful, Cara! Have fun, and wait for people’s expressions when the doors open up in front of you, it’s hilarious! And then when they ask you how you did it, use my response: “Practice! You can do it, too!” 😉

  3. Deborah Allen says:

I experience the song one often. When I am thinking of a certain someone, usually a song comes on that pertains to that person or time I shared with them. And my sister sends me a particular song when I am really down to hear it. It has VERY special meaning to me.

    • Hilary says:

Yes, Deborah! The Radio DJ game works on many levels… it can also serve as messages from living loved ones, or reminders to get in touch with the person that the song reminds you of. Excellent point!

  4. Jennifer says:

Great ideas! I’ve done the “Radio Station DJ” a lot without really intending to.

Hi, I will add a few more, that helps answers with intuition.

    1) Traffic Signal lights – The Red light is for “No” and the Green light is for “Yes” and the yellow “Maybe” , now calm yourself and concentrate on the area between your eyebrows (the place where the soul resides), ask a few questions of which you have the answers and see the light of that color, now keep on doing it with different unresolved questions, it is easy and quite intuitive.

    2) Think of a problem and ask for the message or answer to it, now just take a walk or drive and look at the other hoardings or advertisements or messages on car back mirrors.. you have the answer.

Fabulous little exercises that I’ve totally forgotten to “play” in recent years! Thanks for the reminders! And for the tip to not randomly tell strangers what I am picking up about them. 🙂

thanks Hilary, your article reminded me to practice my intuition and play with it.
when I use public transport and it’s rush hours I try to “predict” which of the commuters is going to get off soon, so I stand next to them and get a seat, it works with around 95% accuracy.
I use my intuition at coaching sessions as well, I can sense the mood of the client and feel what bothers them the most which helps.

How fun! I absolutely believe that everyone has some psychic power, and we just need some practice tuning into it. I like to guess who’s calling or emailing before I see the phone. I’m right about 9 times out of 10. 🙂 And I love to play the “guess what” game with friends and my husband — but they don’t like it because I too often guess correctly!

  13. Yes oh yes.. I just LOVE this Hilary! I think the more we play with our intuition and let it in.. the more information/guidance we get.. it’s just a matter of trust, we get the information constantly. I play the elevator game a lot, just never thought about it. Like you, using my intuitive nature is part of my business, and part of what I teach my clients.. and I play with that side of me all day long.. which fruit/vegetables to pick.. I just put my hands over the bins and ask which ones want to come home with me. We have to get quiet sometimes to hear the guidance.. some people are better at hearing, some at seeing, some at feeling. For me much of what I “know” intuitively just comes out of my mouth. We each have styles of knowing that are stronger and learning to get comfortable with these is also really helpful.
Loved your article.. am sharing pronto.

    Love to you,
    Lisa
