Shopping with Tarot and Intuition—Part II

This is a continuation of Shopping with Tarot and Intuition—Part I, where I dealt with selecting children’s gifts using tarot. Now, on to the adults in your life that you have to shop for!

Here are the previous steps:

  1. Start by separating out the Major Arcana and the Court cards from the Minor Arcana in your favorite tarot deck. Putting them in chronological order for the Majors and separating the court cards by suit is recommended. You’ll see why in a second.
  2. In the previous post we dealt with the Pages of each suit for the kiddies. Take a look for yourself at the remaining court cards (Knight, Queen, and King of each suit) and categorize the people you need to buy for accordingly. If you are having trouble, narrow them down to which suit they would fall into first before deciding whether they are a Knight, Queen, or King. It may help to reference Part I and think of the Pages we already discussed all grown up… What would the grown-up version of the Page of Pentacles want as a gift?
    • Pentacles  Element: Earth
    • Swords  Element: Air
    • Wands  Element: Fire
    • Cups  Element: Water
  3. Now, the Major Arcana. Identify which card stands for which person. Check the list, and use the advice listed for each card accordingly. How do you choose which card for the person? Sometimes there are personal signifiers that appear during readings that are “stand-ins” for the person. An example of this is the associations I have with The Magician. Any time The Magician appeared during a reading, I took that to be a placeholder for my boyfriend at the time.

0 The Fool: This person is a risk-taker and adventurer. Buy them travel gear or if the budget allows, a trip!

I The Magician: Gadget-orientated… if it’s new and cutting-edge, the Magician will want it.

II The High Priestess: A gift certificate for a psychic reading wouldn’t go amiss…

III The Empress: Jewelry that makes her feel simply royal!

IV The Emperor: Clothing that makes him feel powerful and confident

V The Hierophant: Philosophy or theological books

VI The Lovers: Spice up the holidays with an unexpected proposal (matrimonial or otherwise), or some scented candles… you can get as risque or as safe as you are comfortable with this gift for your significant other.

VII Chariot: The need for speed… maybe a trip to an amusement park is in order for this speed-demon?

VIII Strength: A gift of your time and listening ear might be the most appropriate… take this person out to a meal and be prepared for the floodgates of their emotions to be thrown open.

IX The Hermit: Since the Hermit is a homebody, buy them something to be enjoyed within their home and in solitude, such as home furnishings or wall hangings.

X Wheel of Fortune: A bit of a gambler… so take them on a trip to a nearby casino and let them try their luck!

XI Justice: Their favorite crime drama series on DVD

XII The Hanged Man: Bungee-jumping or skydiving, anyone? Turn that world upside down and look at things from a different point of view.

XIII Death: Goth makeup or Día de los muertos figurines

XIV Temperance: A day at the spa or supplies for a “home spa”, such as bath salts and massage oils

XV The Devil: Breaking boundaries or those things that confine you… help this person by giving them a gift certificate for dance lessons or otherwise… help them learn a new skill that may scare them.

XVI The Tower: A gift card to a home renovation/remodeling store… that way it’s perfectly acceptable to smash things and break down walls (for a purpose!)

XVII The Star: Get a good luck charm or something to wish on, such as a four-leaf clover, horseshoe, or a star! (or you could name a star after them)

XVIII The Moon: A beautiful nightlight that provides illumination in the dark, or a turning lamp… more esthetic than functional.

XIX The Sun: A beautiful bouquet of flowers…

XX Judgement: A CD of Gregorian chants or an angel statue

XXI The World: Good luck shopping for this one… they seem to have everything. Think unusual, ecological, and global and you might find a gift, perhaps a donation to the World Wildlife Fund?

Hopefully this exercise with the tarot has helped bring a clearer perspective to gift-giving woes. Until next time, have a wonderful holiday season… may you and yours be safe, warm, healthy, and happy!

Seasons greetings,
~*~Hilary~*~
