I had done all my “important” packing last night: clothes, toiletries, putting aside my technology chargers in an obvious place, etc. So I thought this morning’s task of packing my tarot bag for the conference was going to be easy: it wasn’t. By the time I left my home this morning, I was already running a half an hour later than I anticipated.
I picked Courtney up… while waiting for her I had several texts already from the madwoman Theresa Reed, most of which summarized down to “Why aren’t you here already?”We arrived to a huge yell of “my witches are here!” from Sasha Graham who was helping people sign in. Theresa was close on her heels, and everyone was all smiles: it’s Readers Studio weekend, and people have been waiting all year to see their tarot peeps all in one place!
First Wald and Ruth Ann welcomed us during the Opening Welcome Session, then we had the Meet the Instructors Q & A for the three Master Class instructors Mary K. Greer, Caitlín Matthews, and Sheilaa Hite.
Then we had the Foundation Reading, the cornerstone of Readers Studio. This year Theresa made a tarot lovematch prior to my arrival and partnered Julie and myself up. Julie gave me a reading that really blew my hair back… she was so dead-on it was scary! (That, by the way, is one of the highest compliments I can give about a reader!)
Then we had the First-Timer Welcome, which is always a pleasure to watch and participate in… welcoming a new batch of readers just discovering that yes, there is a place for them, and it’s here with their tarot tribe!
After that, it was time to break for lunch and then check into the hotel (for whoever hadn’t done so already, like me) prior to the first Master Class at 3:30.
Mary K. Greer’s Master Class pushed the envelope this year and made us question our tarot values and belief structures. For the mother of modern tarot and who other people proclaim to be a pillar of the tarot community to be spouting neurological, psychological, and scientific assertions about intuition may have been a bit discomfitting to some in the room. However, I felt better prepared for it after her Intuition and Transference class at the Tarot and Psychology conference last year… I knew what was coming may not be something I entirely agreed with, and that eased whatever blow to my ego self it might have caused!
After Mary’s class it was time for dinner prior to the optional evening classes. Most of us opted to stay on-site and dine in the hotel’s restaurant so that we would be to our classes on time.
I attended Rachel Pollack’s class Tarot of the Gods, all about the gods and goddesses and how they show up in tarot readings (or how they can if you’ll let them). We also learned about the best day of the week to do a tarot reading for different situations (such as Friday for passion, since it’s Venus’s day).
By the time the class was over, it was after 11pm… man, that first day went FAST! I joined Theresa and a few other people in the bar for a nightcap, then headed to my room. It was time to rest up for the traditionally most intense day of the conference, Saturday!
Blessings,
