Billy Joel, Narcissism, and Tarot Readings

“And you can speak your mind, but not on my time.”—Billy Joel, “My Life”

My friend told me about the time she went to a psychic that had been highly recommended by a friend of hers. This person swore up and down how good she was… how accurate. My friend had no reason to distrust her friend’s recommendation.

So she went into the reading expecting to be read by a professional and accurate reader… and wound up hearing all about the psychic’s life and not her own!

When I heard this, I was appalled and flabbergasted. Talk about a captive audience! You’ve got someone there paying for a reading, and then you jaw your head off talking about yourself? Lunacy… and quite honestly, more than a little unethical.

Now, I’m not saying that a reader that brings up personal connections to the cards should be automatically slotted into this category. Quite naturally, in any conversation with another person, you usually draw up your own personal experiences to be able to relate to the other person. So too do readers… if I associated the 8 of Cups with my own story of walking away from a relationship and it then came up in a reading for another person, I would draw upon a part of that to read for the client. Association = Connection. But if the tarot reader continues with the “me, me, me”, you know when it’s gone too far.

As a client, you expect to get your money’s worth with any service you pay for. If the tarot reader you’ve booked is too busy talking about themselves for the session, it’s time to pull the plug on the narcissism machine and get back on track with your reading. Here’s how:

  1. Ask what/how/why questions about your situation that drives the reader back to you and the reason you came in for a reading in the first place.
  2. Bring the cards back to your situation. Single out a particular card that you are having trouble wrapping your head around as it applies to your situation, either because of the meaning the reader interpreted it as or if it doesn’t make sense positionally.
  3. If the reader continues along the selfish track, stop the session and (nicely!) ask for your money back. Please keep in mind a reader’s refund policies… some readers do not offer refunds. If you happen to not get your money back, take the loss with stride… and take your wallet elsewhere to a reader that will honor your questions and your journey.

Well done. I hate when this happens. Great advice, and not something I’ve seen anyone blog about before.

Thanks, Donnaleigh! When my friend told me this story, I couldn’t believe it myself. I’m glad I’m able to pave the way for discussions like this to happen.
