Why I used to lie when people asked me if I had my tarot cards on me

The simple answer was that I didn’t want to do yet another reading for someone for free. One card, two card, a full celtic cross… didn’t matter. I was tired of saying that this was my business. Especially to my friends and people I thought cared more about me as a person than me as a walking talking Zoltar.

If I lied and said, “Oh, I didn’t bring my cards with me” then the matter was solved. I didn’t have to say a damn thing more. I didn’t have to outright say no, or everything that I just stated above. I didn’t have to assert my boundaries. [Fun fact: if you set these kinds of boundaries early on in your business you’re less likely to learn these kinds of lessons the hard way. Go check out last week’s #TarotRap on the subject of boundaries.]

Seemed like such a simple and easy solution, right? Don’t want to do readings, don’t have the vehicle or tool with which you do your readings on you.

Until my best friend made plans to go out to dinner with me and said, “Bring your cards with you.”

No please. No thanks. Just an assumption, an expectation, a way around that particular loophole of me just not asserting my boundaries by being a flake.

Oh, I’ll just remind her to bring her tarot cards with her. That’ll take care of the problem! My best friend must have thought. As if that was the actual problem, that I was forgetful. Nope. I was forgetting on purpose.

And because I didn’t have the strength to assert my boundaries sooner, I ended up losing a friend because of it. I didn’t have the strength to say to her that it was making me feel resentful and disconnected from her when she was treating me as her psychic and not her friend.

Don’t make that mistake. And if you want to keep your tarot cards on you, that’s your choice. But I’d recommend handing out your business cards instead.

Blessings,
